It is during this second phase that the stone circle we see today was built. This was followed by a second phase of construction (the “Phase 2” ), which took place between around 26 BC. It is thought that the first phase of construction (the so-called “Phase 1” ) took place between around 30 BC.
Archaeologists believe that Stonehenge was constructed over a period of several thousand years, beginning in the early Neolithic period. The stones are set within earthworks in a circular layout, and there is evidence that the site was used for ceremonial or religious purposes by the people who built it. It consists of a ring of standing stones, each around 13 feet (4 meters) high, 7 feet (2 meters) wide, and weighing around 25 tons.
